From
Diablo Valley College
To
UC Irvine
UCI's minimum GPA to apply for Business Administration is 3.0, but admitted students in recent cycles have come in with mid-50th percentile GPAs between 3.74 and 3.98 — nearly a full point above that floor. The courses that move the needle most are your six major prep courses: BUS 21, BUS 22, ECON 201, ECON 202, MATH 192, and MATH 120. UCI reviews your GPA in those courses separately, so a rough semester in ENGL 122 is far less damaging than a B+ in Financial Accounting.
Major Requirements
Business Administration (Paul Merage School of Business, B.S.) at UC Irvine
Courses at Diablo Valley College that satisfy UC Irvine's Business Administration major preparation, verified via ASSIST.org.
UCI also offers Economics (School of Social Sciences, B.A.) and Management Science (also within Merage, B.S.). Students sometimes confuse Economics with Business Administration — they are separate majors with different prep courses and very different admit rates. If you're interested in the quantitative side of business, Management Science is worth researching as a possible alternate.

BUS 21 → BUS 22: The Chain You Can't Skip
Financial Accounting (BUS 21) is a hard prerequisite for Managerial Accounting (BUS 22), and UCI requires both for Business Administration admission prep. If you don't start BUS 21 in your first semester at DVC, you risk not completing both courses before your transfer application — which can make you ineligible for admission consideration.
UCI runs on quarters — DVC runs on semesters
One DVC semester is roughly equivalent to one and a half UCI quarters, so expect the pacing of your courses to feel noticeably faster once you arrive on campus — plan for that adjustment before your first quarter begins.

Watch Out
Many DVC students assume they can lock in a UCI spot through the Transfer Admission Guarantee — but Business Administration is explicitly excluded from UCI's TAG program, along with Nursing Science, Art, and all ICS majors. There is no shortcut here. You compete in the regular applicant pool, which means your GPA and completed prep courses (BUS 21, BUS 22, both economics courses, and both math courses) all have to be as strong as possible before you submit in November.
MATH 120 (Statistics) satisfies both UCI's Business Administration major prep requirement and IGETC Area 2 (Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning). That's one course doing two jobs — saving you 3–4 units you can use elsewhere in your plan. Don't take a separate math course just to fill the IGETC math requirement when MATH 120 already does it.
BUS 21 (Financial Accounting) is a prerequisite for BUS 22 (Managerial Accounting), and UCI requires both for admission to the Business Administration major. If you wait until your second semester to start BUS 21, you push BUS 22 to your third semester — which leaves almost no margin for error before your fall transfer application. Start BUS 21 on day one at DVC.
FAQ
UCI requires a minimum 3.0 GPA in all UC-transferable coursework for Business Administration, but the competitive reality is much higher — admitted students in recent cycles had mid-50th percentile GPAs between 3.74 and 3.98. Your GPA in the six major prep courses (including BUS 21 and BUS 22) is reviewed separately, so those grades matter the most.
No — Business Administration is one of the majors explicitly excluded from UCI's Transfer Admission Guarantee program. You will need to apply through the standard UC application process during the November 1–December 1 filing window and compete in the general transfer applicant pool.
The required lower-division prep courses at DVC include BUS 21 (Financial Accounting), BUS 22 (Managerial Accounting), ECON 201 (Principles of Microeconomics), ECON 202 (Principles of Macroeconomics), MATH 192 (Applied Calculus), and MATH 120 (Statistics). You need a grade of C or better in each, with a cumulative 3.0 GPA across all of them.
Yes — IGETC is accepted for Business Administration at UCI. Completing IGETC at DVC satisfies your lower-division general education requirements, which frees up more time for upper-division coursework after you transfer. Note that MATH 120 (Statistics) can count toward both your IGETC Area 2 requirement and your major prep simultaneously.
UCI Business Administration is among the more selective transfer majors on campus — historical data shows roughly 411 students admitted out of approximately 2,589 applicants, putting the admit rate around 16%. The overall UCI transfer rate is closer to 40%, so Business is meaningfully harder to get into than many other majors. Strong performance in your six major prep courses, especially BUS 21 and BUS 22, is essential.

Planning your transfer from Diablo Valley College (DVC) to UC Irvine as a Business Administration major is one of the more competitive paths in the California community college transfer system — and getting the details right early makes an enormous difference. Historical data shows UC Irvine Business Administration admitted roughly 411 students out of approximately 2,589 applicants in a recent cycle, an admit rate around 16% that sits well below UCI's overall transfer rate of about 40%. To be a competitive applicant, DVC students need to complete six lower-division major prerequisites — BUS 21 (Financial Accounting), BUS 22 (Managerial Accounting), ECON 201, ECON 202, MATH 192, and MATH 120 — with a cumulative 3.0 GPA in those courses and an overall transferable GPA as close to 4.0 as possible, since mid-50th percentile admits have come in between 3.74 and 3.98. A critical piece of transfer planning that many students overlook: Business Administration does not participate in UCI's Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) program, meaning there is no way to lock in admission in advance — you compete in the regular applicant pool. On the general education side, IGETC is accepted for this major, and savvy students will notice that MATH 120 satisfies both the IGETC Area 2 math requirement and the major's statistics prerequisite simultaneously — a strategic double-count worth building into your plan. Articulation agreements between DVC and UCI, viewable on ASSIST.org, confirm exactly which DVC courses satisfy each UCI lower-division requirement. Tools like Pipeline help students at Diablo Valley College map all of this out in a single personalized transfer plan — combining major prerequisites, IGETC coursework, and prerequisite chains so nothing falls through the cracks on the road to the Paul Merage School of Business.
